Hot Weather Precautions
The warm and oppressive weather is here. Below are a few important reminders to keep your hound safe this summer....
Remember to bring plenty of fresh water for you and your hound
Take frequent breaks and terminate your walk if you and/or your dog are getting too hot or stressed.
There are signs and symptoms to watch for if your dog is suffering a heat emergency:
Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
Collapse
Body temperature at or above 104° (defer to your vet on how to take your dog's temp)
Increased heart rate and respiratory rate
Gums are extremely red and stay red when pressed against
Acting intoxicated (stupor)
If your dog exhibits these signs, you need to get him out of the heat and contact your vet immediately. Your vet will instruct you on how to safely cool your dog. Your dog will need to be seen by the veterinarian and monitored.
So, hang out with your pal. Dip your toes in the kiddie pool and sip lemonade, but just like any good thing - do it in moderation.
